shifting focus: Coastal protection

Nova Scotia has thousands of kilometers of coastline made up of rocky shores, sandy beaches and steep cliffs. Our coasts provide opportunities for recreation, and appreciation of this beautiful province. More than that, they are complex ecosystems that provide habitat for beloved species big and small. These coastlines are also at risk. Anthropogenic climate change is ushering in sea level rise and speeding coastal erosion, warming ocean temperatures, and changing weather patterns. Humans also impact coastal ecosystems more directly, as oceanfront properties decrease habitat, and human litter washes in and out of the sea.

In our first Shifting Focus photography contest, the Harrison Lewis Centre invites you to submit photos of your coast. Why do you love it? What lives there? What protection does it need?

Submissions open Wednesday 2 June, through Instagram, Facebook, or emailed to the HLC. Our staff will select the top ten photos, and you will vote on our website for the photos that move you most. First prize is an overnight stay in one of the HLC cabins for you and as many people you can squeeze in (up to 6)! In addition, the top three photos will be used in our posters for three more coastal protection events the HLC will run this summer! So get your cameras (or your phones) and yourselves out of doors and to the shoreline, and submit the wonders you capture as we shift focus to coastal protection.
